Those who have seen Elvis alive in concert were very lucky. Seeing Elvis in his glittering jumpsuits and his jet black hair with the trademark sideburns feels so tremendously beyond the limits of consciousness even in those days. Throw in his famous pelvis dance and hysteria follows. Well, those were the days.

Fortunately, many of his concerts are documented and recorded on video. And avid fans, particularly those who are from the current generation, can still view the legend that was Elvis as if he were still making tour performances around the US.

Elvis’ Concerts By Location

There are many documented Elvis concerts available in music stores and video shops. As a fan, you have to know the venues where Elvis held concerts before you start a video library of his performances. The following categorizes Elvis’ concerts according to major venues in his legendary career.

Early Memphis Performances

The year was 1954 when Elvis started doing concerts. He started out with amateur concerts and benefit performances before he had his first few shows as a professional. Elvis’ first concerts early in his career were held in his hometown of Memphis. But it is said that Elvis’ real start was when he performed at a high school show a year earlier in 1953.

Elvis’ first few performances on stage were held in places like the Bel Air Motel, the Eagle’s Nest, and the Bon Air Club; all in Memphis. His growing fame soon took him to other nearby states like Texas, Arkansas, and of course, Louisiana.

Las Vegas Shows

After being busy with other interests like film and recording, Elvis came back to Las Vegas to do a series of annual concerts from 1969 to 1976. His concerts in Las Vegas were always sold out no matter if his performance was fantastic or characterless, which happened occasionally. Elvis’ regular performances in Las Vegas were usually held during summer and after the Christmas season.

Lake Tahoe Concerts

Elvis performed in Lake Tahoe intermittently from 1971 to 1976. These live performances were rarely documented and are considered to be rare, very few pictures and recordings from there have been released.

Tour Concerts

Elvis started a series of concert tours beginning in 1970. Beginning from Texas, his concert tours took him to Florida, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and other popular cities in the US. The most famous of these concert tours was Aloha held in Hawaii. His last performance before his death was in Indiana.

Alicia Augello Cook (born January 25, 1981), better known by her stage name Alicia Keys, is an American recording artist, musician and actress. At age seven, Keys began to play classical music on the piano. She attended Professional Performing Arts School and graduated at 16 as valedictorian. She later attended Columbia University before dropping out to pursue her music career.

An accomplished pianist, Keys incorporates piano into a majority of her songs and often writes about love, heartbreak and female empowerment. She was inspired by several musicians, including Prince, Nina Simone, Barbra Streisand, Marvin Gaye, Quincy Jones, Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. Keys’ style is rooted in gospel and vintage soul music, supplemented by bass and programmed drumbeats. She heavily incorporates classical piano with R&B, soul and jazz into her music, but began experimenting with other genres, including pop and rock, in her third studio album, As I Am. Patrick Huguenin of the New York Daily News stated that her incorporation of classical piano riffs contributed to her breakout success. Jet magazine states she “thrives” by touching her fans with “piano mastery, words and elodious voice”.

The Independent described her style as consisting of “crawling blues coupled with a hip-hop backbeat”, noting that her lyrics “rarely stray from matters of the heart”. Blender magazine referred to her as “the first new pop artist of the millennium who was capable of changing music.”

Often referred to as the “Princess of Soul”, Keys has been commended as having a strong, raw and impassioned voice; others feel that her voice is “emotionally manufactured” at times and that she pushes her voice out of its natural range. Keys’ songwriting is often criticized for lack of depth, which has led to her writing abilities being called limited. Her lyrics have been called generic, clichéd and that her songs revolve around generalities. Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune feels that she “[pokes] around for multi-format hits rather than trying to project any sort of artistic vision”. Diversely, Jon Pareles of Blender magazine stated that the musical composition of her songs makes up for their lyrical weakness, while Gregory Stephen Tate of The Village Voice compared Keys’ writing and production to 1970s music.

Alicia Keys has announced plans to tour the UK. The tour will follow the release of Keys’s new album, The Element of Freedom, which is due out internationally December 15. Tickets for the first round of shows go on sale November 30.

Ministry of Sound London (commonly referred to as just Ministry of Sound), is a nightclub, based in London, United Kingdom and an associated record label.

Ministry was ranked sixth in the 2009 DJ Magazine top 100 clubs poll 2009. As well as the nightclub in London, there is another in Egypt. The Ministry of Sound brand also includes various other products such as dance music compilations and clothing. Ministry of Sound is owned by MSHK Group Limited, which has offices in London, Sydney, Berlin and New York.

The Chairman of MSHK Group is James Palumbo who is also the majority shareholder; a small minority share-holding having been sold to private equity house 3i in 2001. The Chief Executive Officer of MSHK Group is Lohan Presencer. MSHK Group has global sales of £80 million and employs up to 500 personnel worldwide. Its mission statement is: “to create the moments that people live for”. The company also owns the Hed Kandi, Euphoria, and Hard2Beat brands.

Inspired by New York’s Paradise Garage, Ministry of Sound’s London nightclub was the brainchild of DJ Justin Berkmann, who set out to create London’s first club devoted to the US house music scenes of New York, Chicago and Detroit, with a room purely dedicated to sound. He stated: “My concept for Ministry was purely this: 100% sound system first, lights second, design third (in that order); the reverse of everyone else’s idea.”

Berkmann partnered with James Palumbo and Humphrey Waterhouse to bring the concept to life and a site, a disused bus garage, was located in Elephant & Castle in Southwark, London. The club opened on 21 September 1991.

With opening sets from US house DJs like Larry Levan, David Morales, C+C Music Factory, Roger Sanchez and Tony Humphries, the UK’s first 24-hour dance license, and a 140dB(A) sound-system designed and installed by Austen Derek, Ministry of Sound London quickly grew in popularity as a clubbing venue, despite the lack of an alcohol license for the first three years and notoriously strict door policies.

Today, the club remains at the forefront of the global dance music scene, with internationally recognised DJs playing mix sets every Friday and Saturday night. Since April 2008, Fridays have been hosted by The Gallery, with sets from leading hard house and trance DJs. Saturdays are Ministry of Sound’s long-standing Saturday Sessions with house, electro and techno sets from popular DJs including Sasha, Erick Morillo, Pete Tong and David Guetta. Ministry of Sound London also hosts a range of other parties and events during the week and is available for private hire.

The club comprises five main areas; the Bar, the Baby Box, the VIP and the Loft and the Box, the latter housing the club’s primary sound-system, with a specially-built roof to contain sound and a sprung floor intended to enable clubbers to dance for many hours without tiring, inspired by the dancefloor at the Paradise Garage.

Carole King Concerts

When Carole King and James Taylor shared the stage of the Troubadour club in 1970 little did they know that this will be the performance to shoot them both to stardom. The next year King released her album Tapestry which is one of the best-selling albums ever, winning her four Grammy Awards that year and making her the first woman to win so many Grammys in a single year.  

After forty years King and Taylor will get together again for their Troubadour Reunion tour. The tour will start with a show in Melbourne on March 27 and will continue with a series of shows in New Zealand and Japan. In May they will return for the US leg of the tour which will end in July.

The US leg of the Troubadour Reunion tour will include stops at Seattle’s Key Arena, San Jose’s HP Pavilion, LA’s Hollywood bowl, the Jobing.com Arena in Phoenix, the Sommet Center in Nashville, Chicago’s Allstate Arena, The Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit, Air Canada Centre in Toronto, as well as other venues in Columbus, Atlanta, Tampa, Washington, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, and others.

King and Taylor will tour together with their old friends and band-mates guitarist Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar, drummer Russ Kunkel and bassist Lee Sklar.

Both King and Taylor have been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, they are both Grammy Awards winners and are among the most successful musicians ever.

More than 1000 artists have recorded Carole King’s songs. From her 25 solo albums more than 100 hit singles have emerged. Her most successful album, Tapestry, is regarded as a classic not only for its original songs but also for popular covers such as Aretha Franklin’s version of “Natural Woman”. Most recently singer Christine Tobin and pianist Liam Noble expressed their desire to create an album based on Tapestry but looking at the songs from a jazz perspective.
